All About Michigan

Michigan, shot by the people who live here — both peninsulas, all four seasons.

The Michigan we get to live in.

We travel both peninsulas with a camera in hand — the bridge at night, the birds in the backyard, the farms at harvest, and the little towns in between. This site is where the best of it lives.

Michigan Birds

The backyard is a front-row seat.

These cardinals and nuthatches were photographed on a February afternoon in a Merrill backyard — a long lens, a bag of seed, and the patience to wait for the look-back. The female cardinal runs this hub: quieter colors than her mate, and twice the personality.

Michigan’s woods and feeders stay busy in every season, and this is where the best frames live — with more added as the year turns.

Crops & Farms

The working side of the postcard

Michigan grows things. This hub follows the fields and fairs through the year — what is planted, what is blooming, and what is being harvested.

A milkweed pod splitting open to release its seeds

Milkweed season

The only plant a monarch caterpillar will eat, doing its fall work — pods split, seeds on the wind, next year’s butterflies accounted for.

County-fair season is a crop of its own — the grounds, the gardens, and the giant plants that show up every August.

The Collectible Series

The back of an All About Michigan sticker, featuring the Petoskey stone

Flip one over.

Every sticker’s back carries the Petoskey stone — Michigan’s state stone, a fossil coral older than the dinosaurs — and one true Michigan fact. This one: Michigan has more freshwater coastline than any other state in the country, over 3,200 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. Collect the set, learn the state.
